The Project Manager plans, monitors and manages internal project(s), from initiation through completion. Engages internal resources to ensure project delivery is on time and aligned with project requirements and objectives. Applies professional principles, practices, and techniques to lead project processes while controlling cost, performance and risk.

Specific Responsibilities


  • Strong ability to manage customer relationships over the short and long term
  • Be the identifiable leader of an integrated project team, both internally and in the eye of the customer
  • Coaching engineers and other allocated resources in the rigorous application of best practice engineering process tailored to specific project aims
  • Motivate, track and challenge delivery teams through the use of appropriate metrics to monitor and control project progress
  • Direct line management of engineers to include supporting development and sustainment of their professional competencies
  • Support skills analysis and recruitment activities within the engineering department


Project Delivery

  • Full ownership of planning and delivery to cost, schedule and quality of aerospace engineering support projects; typically encompassing safety critical complex electronic hardware, software and mechanical
  • Develop Work and Product Breakdown Structures (WBS/PBS) from analysis of customer requirements, Statements of Work and internal constraints
  • Obsolescence management and engineering replacements
  • Facilitate and enhance the input of engineers to plans, costing and work activities in order to confirm feasibility and achieve engineer ‘buy-in’. The output of this work is typically captured in Microsoft Project Server to provide a single source of cost, resource and schedule information
  • Provide drumbeat project reporting to senior management (financial, resource, progress leading to EVM)
  • Manage the risk process on projects; Identifying risk associated with work packages and facilitating the input of engineering and other business functions to risk identification and analysis, then controlling and monitoring mitigation activity
  • Produce analysis evidence and recommendations to support senior management decision making in relation to project and programme level trade-offs (cost, time, performance)
  • Support within project decisions the requirements of any wider programme lifecycle within which the project exists
  • Develop Statement of Work documentation to support engineering requirements for sub contract engineering development
  • Take ownership of elements of departmental process and champion continuous improvement in these areas

Key Skills And Competencies Required

  • An experienced project manager with a track record of delivery across the full project lifecycle, ideally of medium size but complex engineering developments
  • Solid understanding of project management best practice theory (ideally evidenced by professional qualification such as PRINCE2 or APMP), with the practical ability to tailor and adjust process to gain efficiency on individual projects
  • Experience of day to day people management of local engineering teams and wider stakeholders
  • An ability to interpret complex task data in order to identify a planned path when faced with reasonable risk and uncertainty
  • An articulate communicator (written and oral) with the ability to rapidly gain credibility with customers, peers and engineers
  • Experience of interfacing with MoD related businesses is desirable


Qualifications Required

  • Degree educated in an Engineering discipline
  • Project Management accreditation
